Musical Opportunity

As a comprehensive school student brought up in Lancashire in the North of England music opened up life changing opportunities for me.  I firmly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience music of every kind and that includes the limitless range created by orchestras, opera and choirs.  This drives my own work today with the musical ensembles and communities I make music with and in my work with young people.

On a wider scale, besides my own creative projects, I serve as a Board member for Orchestras Live who work across England connecting communities with world class orchestral experiences.  I learn so much from being part of this innovative and open minded team.  You can find out more about our work here and read a blog I wrote for them all about how I believe Orchestras can connect us all.

It is a great privilege to be the Music Director and Conductor of the Young Sinfonia, the Royal Northern Sinfonia's Youth Orchestra at Sage Gateshead working with such fantastic and inspiring young players.

Earlier this year it was a joy to conduct the 'In Harmony' Newcastle Gateshead 10th Birthday Celebrations culminating in a Side by Side with Royal Northern Sinfonia.

I’m proud to have conducted projects for Sinfonia Viva reaching new audiences with specially designed BSL Signed and Interpreted events.  Working with their partners schools on the Pioneers Project bringing to life the songs and compositions of students Side by Side with Sinfonia Viva players was a very special project.

With Blackpool Symphony Orchestra, our 10 year Residency with Our Lady of the Assumption has reached so many young musicians with a programme creating numerous memorable events including Side by Sides, Concerts, ‘Have a Go’ Conducting  and so much more.

Training the next generation of professional musicians is another strand of my work which I take seriously; conducting the Chamber Orchestra at Leeds Conservatoire and leading their Side By Sides with the Orchestra of Opera North.

Nothing brings me more joy than the opportunity to become part of a musical ensemble and getting to know what uniquely matters for them and the role music plays in their place.

Being Music Director for the award winning Blackpool Symphony Orchestra, Preston Opera and Lytham Choral is an important responsibility; these ensembles fulfil an important role bringing the opportunity to experience the emotional power of music for both musicians and audiences to their doorsteps.

At Blackpool Symphony Orchestra, at the time we needed music most, we launched our lockdown recording of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' in May 2020 at the height of the pandemic raising over £3,000 for Blackpool Foodbank.

The video went on to win the Making Music Award for Best Virtual Concert Award by public vote and was also commended by the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards 2020 and the Classical Music Digital Awards 2020.
